What is a Gag?

A gag is a device used in the role playing of sexual bondage (BDSM). Gags are often associated with role-playing games involving bondage, but this is not always the case. People wear gags for all sorts of reasons. A person wearing a gag can be considered a submissive partner, while others are considered the dominant one.

For some people, gags have connotations of punishment or control and are used as a form of humiliation. Some people derive erotic pleasure from gags in submissive or dominant roles. Wearing a muzzle as a shackle is an act of humiliation because the open mouth is gagged. Combined with other physical limitations, wearing a gag can increase wearers "sense of helplessness and anxiety in BDSM scenes, and render them unable to speak during sexual activities that they would otherwise enjoy.

Some gags are designed to fill the mouth, while others are specifically designed to allow access to the mouth without opening it. Gags can be classified as mouth type, mouth filling type or mouth opening type. What kind of gag is used depends on the taste of the party, the type of role-playing scene and security considerations. Some fetishists are aroused by the sound of gags, and some people make gags when they try to speak or see a person drooling. When a person is aroused by a gag, this is considered paraphilia.

Types of Gags

Not every kind of gag will work for people with different mouths - some people are fine with Ball Gags, while others prefer a simple Tie Gag.

Gags come in many different shapes and sizes, most commonly is the ball gag, but not all of which are shaped like balls.

Ball gags

A ball gag is a term used to describe an round object that goes between the teeth of the wearer's mouth and is tied around the head so that it does not fall out. It is used in both dominant and submissive role-playing games, as whoever wears the gag loses the ability to speak.

Ball gags get their name from balls made of rubber or silicone that are positioned  to gag them. The positioning of the balls between the mouth and the wearer forces the mouth, which prevents the wearer from speaking or making a sound.

This type of gag is a ball made of a solid material, usually rubber or silicone, with a belt or strap that goes around the wearer's head.

If you have a sensitive gag reflex and wish to try a ball gag, you should start with a smaller ball. Ball gags are sex toys that are used to limit a person's language by reducing their ability to make loud noises. This type of gag uses a slick ball to fill the wearer's mouth and keep it open.

Bit Gags

Similar to a ball gag, the bar placed in the wearer's mouth is placed behind the wearer's mouth, behind the teeth, and secured with a head strap. Bit gags are a kind of mouth bite that can be found on horse reins and that can be recognized by the rod that is in their mouth. These rods can be available in various materials and thicknesses and are usually made of soft rubber.

O Ring Gags

Ring gags are the same as ball gags, but they replace the ball gag with a hollow ring. The size of the hollow ring varies, but is usually larger than the object that introduces it into the wearer's mouth. The ring allows access to the inside of the mouth, increasing the airflow and reducing the risk of suffocation. The wearer is also able to turn the ring into a horizontal position if desired.

Inflatable Gags

An inflatable gag is a rubber balloon inflated with a hand valve. Most inflatable gags do not hold the gagged person well, so they are usually coupled with a ring gag to keep them in place.

Fornophillic Gag

Forniphilian gags are a type of gags whose main purpose is to objectify and humiliate the wearer. The most common type of fornication gag is the dildo gag, where the gag is on the face of the dildo. Other types of tools used with Fornphilian strangling include toilet and floor brushes, dusters and ashtrays. Everyone can make different types of Fornsiphilic gags, and you find them finished, but they usually consist of a muzzle and a mouthpiece that can be used to attach various tools.

Medical Gag

Medical gags offer unlimited access to the mouth and stop speaking. The most common medical gags are the Whitehead gag and the Jennings gag. Different types of medical gags can be used in bondage and are used to enhance the theme of the gaming session.

Spider Gag

The Spider Gag is a variant of the Ring Gag, which has hooks that prevent the ring from rotating horizontally.

Stuffing

Filling the mouth with an object (s) to restrict language can be done in the practice of filling, similar to a ball gag. When using fillings in the mouth of the recipient, different materials can be used (except non-digestible items such as food or soft textiles). A stuffed mouth-gag effect can be effective at various levels of intensity. Stuffed gags should never be pushed into the mouth of the recipient, as a large part of the stuffing hangs out of the mouth.

In order to secure the filling in place and prevent the recipient from spitting it out, these gags should be accompanied by other mouth tools and a fabric tape. The risk of suffocation is increased when securing an OTM gag, so caution is required. The use of a larger gag reduces this choking risk.

Gag Safety

One of the most important principles of BDSM is that it is reasonable, safe and consensual. If you want to try gagging, you have to have some basic rules from the start to enjoy the experience.

A gagged subject should never be left alone. Choking is risky because there is a significant risk of suffocation if the nose of the subjects is blocked while wearing the gag. Vomiting or asphyxiation are also a risk because it continues to block the airways. It is common to use additional non-verbal safety mechanisms such as a fixed object or holding hands to release the gagged person to signal distress.

In practice, gags are most effective when silenced by inhibiting breathing. Most gags prevent intelligible speech, but allow loud, inarticulate noises to call for help.  Noise patterns, such as three grunts in quick succession, are often used by BDSM players as protective words.

You should also consider getting a body-safe gag, this listing, or box will tell you if the gag is made from body safe materials.

Make sure your partner or submissive is not sick or ill. For example, do not use gags on someone who has a runny or stuffy nose or difficulty breathing. How to gag is crucial before you start dominating, so you have to make sure the submissive is sure that everything is fine and comfortable before you go any further, as it will cause gagging.

How to use your gag

Before you start

Ball gags can be intimidating at first glance, especially if you're just starting out. We suggest starting your gagging experience with a bit gag for about 15 minutes at a time. Gradually extend the time as you become more used to the sensation. Gagging puts pressure on the jaw and stretches it out. As well as extending the time you can experiment with bigger gags, such as a ball gag.

The first step is for you to talk about expectations and worries, so you can be sure that you are both on the same page. If you put something in your partner's mouth that restricts their ability to talk, you must have that conversation first. There are some things you need to acknowledge before you try a gag.

Your partner will not be able to talk about it, so you need to find an alternative way to tell you when it is getting too intense or uncomfortable. Experts advise agreeing on a specific gesture or series of verbal 'grunts' when a submissive has had enough and wants to stop. For example, the gesture could be  taps the back of the hand three times. It's important to watch for this signals as it could mean the gag is getting too tight, "my jaw hurts" or "I'm uncomfortable".

During play

It is important that you keep an eye on the time so that your submissive will not tire of being gagged, and that you never leave the submissive alone while wearing the gag, as this can prove dangerous. Gags can take some time to remove, so it's best not to leave this too long. Start the scene with the submissive ones holding the gag in their mouth, while the dominant ones adjust the straps on their heads. As you strap on the muzzle, you can ask your submissive questions, they cannot answer for you but this will prepare the scene and create a playful experience for both of you.

Cleaning your gag

Most gags are easy to clean, because the mouth inserts are rubber or silicone and the straps are usually made from another material (cloth, leather or fabric). These materials are easy to clean and disinfect ready for use again.

Once you have finished the scene and have a good time, you need to remove the gag and clean it. You can clean it with water or soap if you like, but you can also use antibacterial soap to be on the safe side. Do not forget to clean after you have tried a gag, as you will need to clean it so that it can be used safely next time.

It is recommended to disinfect the mouth piece from time to time with hot water and a 10% bleaching solution. Pay attention to holes, cracks, burrs and hard-to-clean areas and make sure that you do not contaminate any parts. Remember that not all materials can be completely disinfected; for example, leather and rubber can be porous, so they will never be 100% clean.
